Madhyarjuneswara Swamy Temple Pettaivaithalai is an east facing with a 5 tier Rajagopuram, 2 Prakaras, and a Temple Tank. Pettaivaithalai is on the banks of the Cauvery and is the starting point of the Uyyakondan Canal. The location is very beautiful with the Cauvery, canals, fields, and groves around. We understand that water fills up inside the temple compound during rains and is a beautiful sight.

Madhyarjuneswara Swamy Temple Pettaivaithalai was built by Kulothunga Cholan (1178-1218 AD). Stone inscriptions indicate that the lord was called Marthandeswarar. It is also on record that the temple deities were named after the Thiruvudaimarudur temple.
Madhyarjuneswara Swamy Temple Pettaivaithalai was apparently constructed by Kulothunga Chola to get relief from a curse related to progeny and he was gifted with one upon completion of this temple. This is depicted in a pillar here.
Madhyarjuneswara Swamy Temple Pettaivaithalai is on Thiruchirapalli to Kulithalai road, about 12 kms before Kulithalai on the left side.
